Do I need a degree to start a home business in cake decorating?
May 142010
I want to start selling wedding cakes and such out of my home, how do I get started? I have a high school diploma…do I need more? Do I need any certifications?
no you dont have to have any sort of degree of certification or to do that… my grandmother did the same thing for many many years.. and she was very successful at it. she did it all in her home so it always smelled amazing!! a couple of friends i went to college with are trying to do something very similar, however they are actually renting out space to have a store. thats a very big difference. granted, my friend’s college major was history education, but she is baking cakes now. so a course of study is irrelevant really, because basically can u make an awesome cake or not?? thats whats going to create and keep business for you.. clientele.
if you were to rent a space in a strip plaza or something like that, that would open up a whole different can of worms.. in that kind of operation, you would want to work with someone with a business degree or something similar because of course expenses would be much more complex than rather having enough eggs and flour in your own kitchen.. plus, then u would have to worry about having insurance and liability coverage on the place, etc… what a headache..
running it out of your home is a great idea, especially starting out. if someday your business explodes in size, then look for a partner to help. in the mean time i would get yourself as known as possible. put an advertisement in the newspaper, websites (like craigs list.com), mail out flyers, even put together a small catalog if you know how to. you want to get your first customers, and then more and more will come simply from hear say and good referals!!
good luck!!!

You’ll need a health permit and inspection of your kitchen to make sure that it meets health dept standards.
More than likely you’ll need to rent a commercial space with a commercial approved kitchen.
A degree, no.

buy a shop in place famous near your area and have a health inspection after selling some cakes and have surprise inspection too.if health officers are having good image of u in this type of inspection then don’t worry keep going and for the degrees if u have a heidratry cake making relatives or u r experienced then i don’t think that it is it requires degrees.
well best of luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
